The water poured into the tunnel of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project in Helambu village municipality of Sindhupalchowk on Tuesday, April 12 reached Sundarijal at 10:45 pm on Monday.
Engineer Vivek Khanal of EPTISA, a consulting company for the Melamchi project, said that it would take three to four days for the water to reach the bottom of the tunnel. It was confirmed that the water from Melamchi reached Sundarijal after seeing it in the channel on Monday night.
The water has now been released in Bagmati after cleaning the tunnel which was closed since June 15 last year. The flow of Bagmati seems to have increased after Melamchi water was released. Local Ram Prasad Pudasaini said that the murky water of Bagmati has increased now.
Last year, when the water was cut off in the tunnel, the source of Melamchi River was flooded on the same night. This damaged the drinking water structure constructed in the source area. The damaged structure was rebuilt and water was poured into the tunnel last April.
Spokesperson of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project Rajendra Pant informed that Minister for Drinking Water Umakanta Chaudhary is scheduled to visit Melamchi this morning.
