Located in Durbarmarg, The Old House is a jewel of French and Asian fusion cookery. This perfect blend of classic and modern design was started in December of 2014. It is a perfect blend of classy and modern design, where cuisines are merged to the forms of art. With its service matching the quality of food, the place is good for a meeting, quick meal, and as well as for gatherings.
The first thing I noticed as I stepped into the restaurant was the lush greenery. The seating area which is surrounded by potted plants and a beautiful perpendicular garden space with the bar created a refreshing and calm environment. For people who want to be around greenery while sipping on their favorite drinks and enjoying delicious meals, this is the place to go.
I was very excited to see Ginger Pumpkin Soup with garlic bread being served as starters. It was perfect for the chilly winter morning. The soup was a beautiful blend of roasted pumpkin, apple, ginger, and spices. As I took the first sip of the hot soup, a combination of sweet-meet-salty taste filled my mouth. The garlic bread complimented the soup really well and made the dish more commendable. Aashish Shrestha, who has been working as the executive chef at The Old House for six years said, “We make a puree of all the ingredients of the soup after oven-roasting everything. Then we make the soup out of the puree”.
The Ginger Pumpkin Soup with garlic bread was under their winter-special menu. They have recently made changes in the menu as well as the concept of the restaurant. Earlier, the restaurant had both outdoor and indoor dining with separate concepts. “We only have outdoor dining for now as the indoor space is under construction”, said Jagat Lama, Assembly Manager of The Old House. The restaurant plans to keep the outdoor space as casual dining and is coming up with an ‘Exclusive Whiskey Bar’ theme for its indoor area. “We are also planning to open a coffee shop along with a bakery”, Lama adds.
Just as I finished my soup, I was served with the main dish, Marinade Chicken with mashed potato on the side. The chicken was heavily seasoned with pepper, herbs and spices with a juicy piece of bacon. Though the marinade chicken didn't have additional flavor, the seasonings balanced the flavors of the dish so well. “The Marinade Chicken is cooked on a low heat for four hours”, says Shrestha.
Just when I thought I could not eat anymore, dessert was served. There is always room for dessert, I thought to myself as I savored the Molten Lava with a glob of vanilla ice-cream. The dessert, which falls under warm desserts, was an entire plateful of treats garnished with chocolate ganache, strawberry and nasturtium flowers. The dessert was rich in chocolate and every bite of the cake was crunchy.
I enjoyed my experience at The Old House completely. Their enthusiasm, fusioned foods, and greenery will amaze anybody. The extended menu also caters to the winter special menu, indulgent desserts and varieties of drinks.
