Basantapur is famous for Kathmandu Durbar Square, which contains centuries-old palaces, courtyards, and temples, some of which were destroyed in the 2015 earthquake.
The palaces of the Malla and Shah rulers who ruled over Kathmandu are located in the Kathmandu Durbar Square. The plaza is surrounded by quadrangles, which show courtyards and temples, in addition to some mansions. Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square gets its name from a statue of Hanuman, Lord Ram's monkey devotee, that stands at the palace's entrance.
