Most slaughterhouses in Bhaktapur not upto standards

Most of the animal slaughterhouses in Bhaktapur have been found to be unfavorable for the health of consumers.

During the monitoring of animal slaughterhouses conducted by Bhaktapur Municipality today, it is seen that most of the animal slaughterhouses are very dirty and this adversely affects the health of the consumers. The slaughterhouses including Hanuman Ghat and Maheshwari were monitored today under the leadership of Raj Krishna Gora, coordinator of the market monitoring committee of the municipality.

He said that the meat going to the market from here would not be healthy as the slaughterhouse is dirty and it would adversely affect the health of the consumers. According to Gora, the abattoir should be more organized and run according to the prescribed criteria. He said that most of the slaughterhouses did not have marble or tiles to easily clean the floor and walls, did not manage wastewater drainage, did not purify water, did not test whether animals were slaughtered humanely and did not properly manage the waste after slaughtering pigs.

Maheshwari Suppliers, Jai Maheshwari Maa Fresh Meat, New Maheshwari Hygienic Meat Shop, slaughterhouse were found to be not paying attention to cleanliness, minimizing machine and table not kept clean, apron not cleaned, garbage not managed to operate within the standards. Market Inspector Ram Krishna Prajapati informed that some shops have been instructed to renew their shops and the scales have not been renewed by the Department of Weights and Measures.

Slaughterhouses should be segregated, should be cleaned, aprons should be white and clean, price list should be maintained, meat table should be covered with glass, meat should be protected from dust and flies, calves should be cut or killed without being seen by live calves, and all the slaughterhouses have been instructed to make arrangements so that water can be stored and cleaned in the meat management ground.
