The need for a self-reliant economy was emphasized by President Vidyadevi Bhandari at a function held at the President's Residence this afternoon after former administrator Suryanath Upadhyaya was honored with a bronze medal worth Rs 200,000. Stating that all Nepalese should all focus on building a self-reliant economy while resolving to build a prosperous nation after significant political changes, she said that modernization and commercialization of agriculture was indispensable to take the lead in the great drive to achieve socio-economic prosperity.
Presenting the fact that the epidemic of COVID-19 and the earthquake has hampered the dimensions of the economy, the President said that the path to prosperity can be taken through proper use of water resources through power generation, irrigation system, tourism promotion, import substitution and export promotion.
"Transparency, good governance and accountability are essential in the process of strengthening the economy. I am confident that the economy can be moved towards development through quality and employment-oriented education," she said. She also drew the attention of the concerned parties to maintain zero tolerance against corruption. Stating that quality education and health care would be important to accelerate the pace of development slowed down by the epidemic and the earthquake and build a self-reliant economy, she said that adequate investment was needed for that. The President's statement was that the important task of nation building can be fulfilled only with healthy and efficient manpower.
