Voting for the post of NC president to be held again

The re-election will take place as none of the candidates got 51 percent of the total votes cast.

The counting of votes for the post of President of the 14th General Convention of the Nepali Congress has been completed this morning. According to the Central Election Committee (CEC), the re-election will take place after none of the candidates for the post of chairman got 51 percent of the total votes cast.

According to the committee, Prime Minister and current president Sher Bahadur Deuba got 2,258 votes while his nearest rival party central member Dr. Shekhar Koirala got 1,729 votes. Former General Secretary Prakash Man Singh got 371 votes, Bimalendra Nidhi got 249 votes and Kalyan Gurung got 20 votes.

A total of 4,681 out of 4,743 voters had cast their votes in the polling held from Monday morning till night. A total of 77 votes were disqualified in the election. According to the Congress constitution, it is mandatory to get more than 50 percent of the votes cast for the election. According to the committee, Deuba got 48.23 percent, Koirala got 36.93 percent, Singh got 7.92 percent, Nidhi got 5.31 percent, and Gurung got 0.04 percent. According to the committee, Deuba, who got the highest number of votes, needed 81 more votes to win.

Committee Coordinator Gopal Krishna Ghimire said that preparations are being made for re-polling and a new election schedule will be published soon. According to the Congress constitution, it is mandatory to get more than 50 percent of the votes cast for the election. If for the first time any candidate does not get more than 50 percent of the votes, re-voting will be held between the two candidates who get the most votes.

In re-polling, the candidate who gets the most votes will win. But for the first time, if there are only two candidates, the candidate who gets more votes will win. Voting was held for 132 posts including office bearers and members of the Congress Central Working Committee. The counting of votes for other posts will be done at the party's central office after the counting of votes for the post of president.
