CPN-UML candidate Bina Kumari Thapa has been elected the Deputy Speaker of the Gandaki province assembly.
In the election held on Monday, Thapa secured 32 votes to become the deputy speaker, informed province assembly member Govinda Bahadur Nepali.
Her close contender Parbati Tamang of the Nepali Congress obtained 26 votes.
Newly-elected Speaker Krishna Prasad Dhital remained neutral in the voting process. A province assembly member from the Nepali Congress was also absent.
The province assembly has a total of 60 members. Thapa received votes from the provincial assembly members of the UML, CPN (Maoist Centre), Rastriya Prajatantra Party, and CPN (Unified Socialist).
Thapa was elected as the province assembly member from Baglung under the proportional representation electoral system. –
